This simulation is designed for students in the respiratory therapy/respiratory therapy program at the second-year level or above, or respiratory therapist/respiratory therapist. Participants will assess and treat an adult in respiratory distress after admission to the floor. This simulation will challenge you to perform a respiratory assessment, recognize the common signs and symptoms of adult respiratory distress, and apply respiratory therapies appropriate to the severity of the situation.
This simulation is exploratory. We suggest you do it individually. The simulation should take about 20 minutes to complete, and the self-debriefing should take about 10 minutes. A group debriefing is then recommended, ideally in groups of 6 to 10 learners.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of this scenario, participants will be able to:
- Perform a respiratory assessment on an adult patient
- Recognize the signs and symptoms of respiratory distress
- Determine the level of work of breathing
- Apply respiratory care appropriate to the severity of the case
