A 34-year-old, gravida 2, term 0, preterm 1, living 1 (G2T0P1L1) was admitted with preeclampsia and threatened preterm labor. The respiratory therapist is called to the operating room for an emergency cesarean section. The RT learner will collaborate with the physician and nurse to identify the need for neonatal resuscitation, stabilization and surfactant administration.
Learning Objectives:
- Demonstrate an organized pre-resuscitation briefing and equipment check to ensure team readiness and functionality of necessary supplies for neonatal resuscitation.
- Describe the correct steps and techniques for resuscitating and stabilizing a preterm neonate including airway management, ventilation strategy.
- Identify the appropriate method for surfactant administration in a preterm neonate, including indications, dosage calculation, administration technique, and post-procedural assessment.
Simulation Modality:
Virtual gaming simulation / virtual patientEvalution/Validation:
This simulation’s scenario and script were formally peer-reviewed by two external institutions, then the final simulation was pilot tested by several students on a student testing committee then as part of the Virtu-WIL Student Program’s rollout.
