In this scenario, a 21-day old patient from Fort Albany, Treaty 9 (Cochrane, ON) is admitted to the pediatric/neonatal intensive care unit (PICU) with bronchiolitis, suspected RSV (swabs pending). The respiratory therapy (RT) student is responsible for completing the initial assessment, management, and reassessment of the patient. As the scenario progresses, they will need to recognize and prepare for a needle decompression.
Prior to the simulation, the learner is prompted to learn about the challenges and opportunities associated with providing and receiving health care in rural and remote Canada. After the simulation, the learn is asked to take time to learn about Indigenous knowledge and philosophy, and reflect on the importance of integrating/aligning western medicine with the elements of the Medicine Wheel.
It is recommended that this simulation is associated with a facilitated group debrief.
Learning Objectives:
- Recognize the signs of worsening respiratory distress in a neonatal patient
- Describe appropriate progressive interventions in the management of respiratory distress in a neonate and reassess for intended response
- Understand the challenges of seeking healthcare in rural and remote areas
