A two-part scenario, designed for an interprofessional group of clinical externs, this was made to meet two of the learning goals they had requested: high flow and palliation. Patient is sick and while initially responding to treatment, a time warp in the scenario allowed us to also fit in palliation in the same education session.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify when to call RT for help
- Practice giving a MDI through the port on the high flow
- Utilize comfort measures to reassure a patient struggling with shortness of breath
- If there is an RT participant
— Respond to shortness of breath by adjusting the flow rate of the high flow
— Respond to decreased oxygen saturations by increasing the FiO2
Simulation Modality:
Manikin-basedEquipment:
High flow oxygen, MDI, syringe, alcohol swabs, manikin, IV, blankets and hospital gown
Competencies:
Respiratory assessment and treatment.
Palliative approaches to care
Utilizing high flow oxygen
Evalution/Validation:
Reviewed by Anita Montgomery RT prior to first use
Utilized with a groups of clinical externs and minor revisions made after to clarify
