This is a simulation that focuses on communication with family in a neonatal setting. It focuses on terminology, voice tone and body language.
The simulation begins in the Birth Unit, where NRP is in progress with the father watching closely and asking questions. He is asking questions which you must answer by speaking into the microphone on your device. The answer is then analyzed and assigned points with terminology and tone being considered. As the simulation progresses, body images and voice tones are encountered and the correct image and audio must be selected. As the setting moves to the NICU, further questions must be answered appropriately regarding the NICU environment and equipment, keeping non medical terminology and empathetic voice tone in mind.
Learning Objectives:
-
Use empathetic and clear language to explain neonatal condition:
-
Communicate effectively with the baby’s father, explaining the baby’s current condition, the steps being taken, and the rationale behind them in an empathetic manner.
-
-
Apply appropriate communication with both healthcare team and family during NRP:
-
Collaborate with the healthcare team (nurses, pediatricians) during NRP while maintaining professional and clear communication.
-
Keep the family (especially the father) informed while ensuring the safety and efficiency of the resuscitation effort.
-
-
Evaluate the effectiveness of communication strategies:
-
Post-scenario evaluation focuses on the effectiveness of communication strategies used under pressure. How well was the information conveyed to the father? Did the healthcare team understand and respond effectively?
