This virtual simulation focuses on assessment of an 80 y/o female who was found unwell at home by her daughter. The patient has experienced increased lethargy and nausea, as well as increasingly severe vomiting and diarrhea in the past 24 hours. The case will focus on an older adult patient from inital assessment through diagnosis and treatment of a serious illness (fluid volume deficit), with the focus on the assessment and treatments unique to older adults. The learning goals of this simulation is to be able to recognize normal and abnormal physiological changes during an older adult assessment to identify appropriate interventions and treatment options in an urgent situation. As well as identify the legal and ethical issues in an older adult emergency situation to protect patient rights and human dignitiy, and, communicate relevant information to the healthcare provider during an urgent situation to help prevent deterioration in clinical status. The learner will take on the nursing role to treat this patient.

Learning Objectives:

Perform a comprehensive admission assessment of the older adult to identify any threats to patient status.

Recognize normal and abnormal physiological changes during an older adult assessment to identify appropriate interventions and treatment options in an urgent situation.

Identify the legal and ethical issues in an older adult emergency situation to protect patient rights and human dignity.

Communicate relevant information to the healthcare provider during an urgent situation to help prevent deterioration in clinical status.

Simulation Modality:

Virtual gaming simulation / virtual patient

Evalution/Validation:

This simulation’s scenario and script were formally peer-reviewed by two external institutions, then the final simulation was pilot tested by several students on a student testing committee then as part of the Virtu-WIL Student Program’s rollout.
