This virtual gaming simulation (VGS) is a serious game designed for health care students and professionals. The VGS provides an opportunity for knowledge and skills application, critical thinking and problem-solving in caring for an agitated older adult with dementia who had recently been admitted in a Long Term Care residence. Game players are invited to make decisions in a realistic situation and encouraged to try different approaches.

Learning Objectives:

Demonstrate use of effective communication skills

Apply effective strategies for managing difficult behaviours

Identify environmental factors related to safety in older adults

Identify environmental factors contributing to an agitated state in older adults

Explore the impact of medications on older adults

Simulation Modality:

Virtual gaming simulation / virtual patient

This simulation’s scenario and script were formally peer-reviewed by two external institutions, then the final simulation was pilot tested by several students on a student testing committee then as part of the Virtu-WIL Student Program’s rollout.
