The patient is a 42-year-old Filipino woman admitted to the acute medical unit for treatment of pneumonia and a urinary tract infection. The patient is also a very passionate nurse who is supporting her family overseas, while working at a short-staffed facility which has aided in her current state of mental exhaustion. In this interactive simulation, you will be using crisis intervention and prevention strategies with a patient demonstrating anger and aggressive behaviour in an acute care setting.

Identify factors that trigger patient reactions from the intrapersonal, interpersonal, and contextual levels.

Apply therapeutic communication and relational practice skills using a patient-centered and trauma-informed approach.

Demonstrate verbal and nonverbal de-escalation techniques to reduce and prevent anger and aggression.

Identify ways in which the social determinants of health impact health outcomes.

Evalution/Validation:

This simulation’s scenario and script were formally peer-reviewed by two external institutions, then the final simulation was pilot tested by several students on a student testing committee then as part of the Virtu-WIL Student Program’s rollout.
