In this simulated scenario you will play the role of an entry level Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT). Before you begin, the preceptor will start by asking you questions to review the relevant theory. You will observe three (3) different scenarios in which Chain of Custody protocols must be followed when collecting specimens with legal implications. You will be asked to identify breaches in protocol in each scenario that could compromise Chain of Custody. You will also be asked to explain proper procedure to ensure that sample(s) with legal implications are collected according to “Best Practices”.
Learning Objectives:
- Define Chain of Custody protocol.
- Describe multiple scenarios that may require Chain of Custody protocol.
- Identify breaches in Chain of Custody protocol.
- List the steps required when maintaining Chain of Custody protocol.
- Complete a Chain of Custody Form.
- Perform urine sample collection to established Chain of Custody protocol.
- Perform specimen processing according to established Chain of Custody protocol.
Simulation Modality:
Virtual gaming simulation / virtual patientEvalution/Validation:
This simulation’s scenario and script were formally peer-reviewed by two external institutions, then the final simulation was pilot tested by several students on a student testing committee then as part of the Virtu-WIL Student Program’s rollout.
