Patient presenting with chest pain and ST elevation. Following our hospital’s protocol to sent the patient to a catheterization lab at a different facility.

Learning Objectives:

Correctly identify ST changes indicative of a STEMI
Respond to signs of a STEMI by using PRN orders and/or medical directives to choose and deliver the correct treatments
Identify one or two common risks of the medications administered during routine STEMI protocol
Manage multiple urgent tasks by prioritizing and using resources available

Simulation Modality:

Manikin-based

Equipment:

Manikin or person role playing, nasal prongs, syringes, alcohol swabs, IV start kit, vitals machine, nitro spray, ECG showing ST elevation, lab result showing troponin, medical directive and possible order set for ACS

assessment

Evalution/Validation:

I reviewed this one quickly with Jaclyn Neufeld, RN, MN  (Quality and Interprofessional Practice, Intensive care unit)  Then tested with two different groups of clinical externs.  One group did have an RT student in it though it wasn’t designed for RT learning, the other was almost exclusively 4th year BScN students.  Some modifications were made for clarity.
