Following a fall on the ice, Ms. Robert goes to the emergency room where, after certain tests, she is diagnosed with a hip fracture. After preoperative preparation, the patient leaves for the operating room. Back in her room after her total hip replacement surgery, the patient refuses to move and develops leg pain after a few days, similar to deep vein thrombosis. As time goes by, the patient’s condition gets worse. A cardio-respiratory arrest occurs, and the staff on-site tries to resuscitate her.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Perform a focused post-operative assessment.
  2. Identify priorities in the management of respiratory distress.
