An Objective Structured Teaching Exercise (OSTE) is a simulation-based educational method that allows clinical supervisors to practice teaching, feedback, and learner support skills in realistic, standardized scenarios. This package provides materials to run three different scenarios for clinical supervisors to practice formative feedback discussions with simulated learners. Each scenario contains observations and goals for the role of supervisor, and responses/internal state information for the student role.
1) “Pleased Patients, Concerned Supervisor”: a learner with strong interpersonal skills who requires support in strengthening clinical reasoning and incorporating prior feedback.
2) “Is It Just Me? Addressing Subtle Professionalism Concerns in Supervision”: a learner whose over-confidence is undermining professionalism with low engagement in their placement.
3) “Following the Script: Supervising Structure Without Connection:” a learner who has a solid knowledge base but requires support in developing clinical reasoning, flexibilty and patient-centred approaches.

Goals & Objectives

Learning Objectives:

1) Apply feedback models to a simulated formative debrief or evaluation for a learner.
2) Assess strengths and areas for improvement in one’s own and peers’ feedback practice.
3) Formulate strategies to address identified areas for improvement in feedback practices.

Evalution/Validation:

This was tested at a faculty development retreat at the University of Manitoba for the MSc in Genetic Counselling Program, where we collected evaluation data from the participants.  Following the initial pilot, revisions were made to the instructions.  This was then run again at another faculty development event with Genetic Counsellor Educators across North America
