This virtual simulation guides learners through the process of completing a tracheostomy discharge from the perspective of a Respiratory Therapist (RT). The scenario emphasizes patient-centered communication, requiring learners to perform a respiratory assessment, practice tracheostomy care and suctioning, complete the tracheostomy discharge checklist, and integrate interdisciplinary team collaboration. Using a structured discharge checklist, participants will ensure all critical components—such as equipment, patient education, and follow-up care—are addressed. The simulation also focuses on the learner delivering effective, customized education and promoting confidence in at home tracheostomy care while prioritizing patient needs and concerns.

Learning Objectives:

  • Integrate tracheostomy assessment findings into a discharge plan
  • Apply a comprehensive checklist for a tracheostomy discharge plan
  • Incorporate the appropriate interdisciplinary team members required to coordinate a tracheostomy discharge
  • Deliver effective and customized education to the patient utilizing patient-centered care
