This scenario is intended for you to utilize your leadership and communication skills. The focus of this scenario is to learn how to effectively manage a scene and communicate with supervisors and members of the fire department.

Learning Objectives:

1. Understand key concepts to Crew Resource Management (CRM):
• Communication – Use closed-loop communication and encourage respectful questioning of any perceived authority
• Situational awareness – Utilize the Observe, Orient, Decide, Act (OODA) Loop – evaluate risks, adjust to changes, and know limitations
• Problem solving – Avoid group think and communicate with the team
• Decision making – Utilize the DECIDE acronym – Detect problem, Evaluate, Choose options, Implement choice, Detect changes from that choice, Evaluate results
2. Consider how CRM can apply and help and reduce errors
3. Reflect on your own leadership style, CRM, situational awareness during scene management of patients/bystanders, interagencies, and supervisors

Simulation Modality:

Virtual gaming simulation / virtual patient

Evalution/Validation:

This simulation’s scenario and script were formally peer-reviewed by two external institutions, then the final simulation was pilot tested by several students on a student testing committee then as part of the Virtu-WIL Student Program’s rollout.
