Mildred Patterson, 70 years old is in the cardiovascular surgical inpatient unit, 5 days post quadruple bypass surgery. She is scheduled for discharge later today when she reports to the nurse she fell through the night.

Learning Objectives:

Identify alterations in level of consciousness to institute early interventions

Demonstrate accurate neurological assessments including the Glasgow Coma Scale to detect early changes in level of consciousness.

Anticipate diagnostic and laboratory tests for a patient experiencing an alteration in level of consciousness for a comprehensive assessment.

Communicate essential patient information to the healthcare team to assist with care planning.

Determine priorities of care for a patient experiencing an alteration in the level of consciousness to prevent deterioration.
