Care of the older adult experiencing hospitalization (VR)

In this scenario, learners will care for an older adult who has had surgery to repair a fractured hip. Learners will identify risk factors and choose priority assessments to complete, evaluate findings and determine which findings require further investigation or intervention. The simulation will take place over several hours during a day shift on an orthopaedic surgical unit.

Learning Objectives:

Utilize therapeutic communication techniques when assessing and providing care to a hospitalized older adult.

Incorporate best practices into care of a hospitalized older adult.

Identify priority health assessments for a hospitalized older adult.

Prioritize and implement interventions based on assessment findings.

Simulation Modality:

Extended reality (virtual reality, augmented reality, mixed reality), Video, Virtual gaming simulation / virtual patient

Evalution/Validation:

This simulation’s scenario and script were formally peer-reviewed by two external institutions, then the final simulation was pilot tested by several students on a student testing committee then as part of the Virtu-WIL Student Program’s rollout.
