The learner will apply the principles of safe medication administration of a narcotic using different routes in the Geriatric population. You will be required to use clinical judgement, reasoning, critical thinking skills, and pas knowledge when choosing the appropriate narcotic based on the patient’s history and background knowledge. This scenario is not about the actual skill/technique itself. The focus is around the 10 rights of medication administration and the 4 checks. 3 checks at medication cart and 1 check bedside.

Learning Objectives:

General Learning Outcomes

  1. Apply knowledge of the 10 rights of safe drug administration according to nursing program and competencies

  2. Recall proper procedures to confirm drug orders prior to administration

  3. Choose the most effective and safest drug, dose and route to administer medication based on patient history and physical assessment

Specific Learning Objectives

  1. Apply knowledge utilizing a pain assessment tool to determine patient’s need for analgesia

  2. Determine appropriate analgesia based on patient history and presentation

  3. Recall the steps to safe medication administration utilizing the rights and checks

  4. Outline common adverse and/or side effects from medication on the aging population

  5. Examine the importance of clarifying medication orders for safe administration

  6. Examine the importance of SBAR as an effective tool to communicate patients’ information to other members of the health care team

Cultural Safety Objective

  1. Discuss age-related changes that impact the patients ability to take medications and explore ways to help ensure they take them

Simulation Modality:

Virtual gaming simulation / virtual patient

Evalution/Validation:

This simulation’s scenario and script were formally peer-reviewed by two external institutions, then the final simulation was pilot tested by several students on a student testing committee then as part of the Virtu-WIL Student Program’s rollout.
