PeriopSim is a simulation learning tool for the iPad that helps OR staff to learn instrumentation and procedures. PeriopSim uses video of live surgery, narration, scoring and feedback to provide a realistic learning environment. The product is designed to bridge the gap between class and the OR. It helps nurses and other OR staff to learn instrumentation and procedures safely before they enter the OR. For educators this means preceptor time is minimized, nurses become productive more quickly and orientation can be accelerated.
PeriopSim has been developed in close collaboration with surgeons, nurses, educators and neuroscientists to ensure accuracy and realistic learning outcomes. The concept for PeriopSim draws from many years of experience in surgery simulation research and product development.
PeriopSim was selected by the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) for inclusion in the Periop 101 curriculum as part of a pilot program. It has also been selected for several landmark academic research studies to measure the effectiveness of simulation for nursing education.
