Sault College Health, Wellness and Continuing Education Facilities

Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario

Canada

Sault College Health, Wellness and Continuing Education facilities were established in 2005 to offer experiential learning through simulation within health programs and to the communities at large. Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Practical Nursing, Personal Support Worker, Occupational Therapy Assistant and Physiotherapy Assistant, Continuing Education, Pharmacy Technician, and Fitness and Health Promotion students develop skills in a fun and safe manner. Inter-professional education is highly valued and is under active development. Sault College holds strong collaborative partnerships with Sault Area Hospital, Durham College Critical Care Program, Algoma Stroke Network and the Northern Ontario School of Medicine to provide professional growth and certifications such as Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Critical Care Registered Nurse, and IV therapy.
The lab wing has eight spacious rooms with two rooms dedicated to high-fidelity simulation. The adult room houses Metiman, Simman, three Megacode Kelly’s and Nursing Kelly while the mom/baby room houses two Noelles, Nursing Anne, Simbaby, two Simkids and two Simbabies. Low fidelity mannikins/models and torsos are commonly used for basic skill development and as a hybrid approach to learning. All lab areas are utilized for curriculum delivery, remedial assistance, skill practice and testing, professional growth, marketing and research.
The newest lab space is an open-concept style condominium dedicated to Personal Support Worker students to develop skills to safely and competently assist the elderly in their own homes. This state-of-the-art lab has a fully functional kitchen/laundry area while the rest of the living areas are designed to accommodate assistive devices. The area has panoramic cameras and microphones to record from a control room located down the hall. Debriefing is done using the Smart TV.
Sault College looks forward to networking with other specialists to continue to expand the field of simulation through a variety of educational and research methods.
