Deeper Dive – Virtual Reality Simulation for Clinical Training | The Michener Institute of Education at UHN & Lumeto

October 14 – 14

Register in advance

Canada faces a critical shortage of respiratory therapists, with projected demand outstripping supply by thousands of positions by 2031. Clinical placements, a cornerstone of training, are increasingly difficult to secure.

To address this, Michener partnered with Canadian company Lumeto to integrate its InvolveXR virtual reality platform into the RT program. Using immersive VR simulations, students practiced high-stakes scenarios such as emergency assessment and code blue response before entering placements.

The project showed:

🎓 75–90% of students reported higher confidence, decision-making skills, and procedural knowledge

📈 Didactic test scores improved by 40–47% compared to baseline

🏥 Reduced dependency on limited clinical placements and faculty-led labs

🖥️ Flexible delivery across in-person, at-home, and instructor-led formats

Join this Deeper Dive to learn how Michener is embedding VR into training at scale, and how other health education programs can adopt this technology to build workforce capacity.
