RCPSC-accredited SIM programs are recognized as leaders in the field

The Allan Waters Family Simulation Centre at St. Michael’s Hospital was recently granted five-year accreditation status by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC).

These programs are also recognized for their focus on interprofessionalism.
“The Allan Waters Family Simulation Centre offers comprehensive healthcare simulation for staff and students to develop and maintain technical and non-technical skills,” said Dr. Doug Campbell, the centre’s Medical Director. “We are passionate about our work and want to push the boundaries of simulation. The Royal College Accreditation acknowledges our ability to deliver high-quality opportunities for all of our learners including students, staff and researchers. We are actively engaged with our frontline workers (of all disciplines) directly in their workplace in order to improve the delivery of care and ultimately patient safety. We are actively using simulation to detect latent hazards in both the surgical and medical environment, and increasingly engaged in outreach activity. In order for us to deliver quality care to our patients, all of us must continue to improve, at every stage of our career.”

“Accreditation by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada was a process of validation for us,” said Nazanin Khodadoust, Manager of the Allan Waters Family Simulation Centre. “It reflects the fact that our program has been assessed against the highest nationally recognized standards in simulation-based education and research. As a status, accreditation is much more than a formal recognition for us, it’s a commitment to an ongoing journey in which we seek ways to further grow and enhance the quality of our program in all aspects.”
The SIM centre celebrated its accreditation status on Tuesday, April 7th. Guest speakers included hospital and simulation centre leadership. SIM-one’s Director of Education Dr. Bruce Ballon attended the Allan Waters accreditation celebration event.
“This recognition is well deserved for a program that demonstrates excellence in simulation training and leadership,” said Dr. Ballon. “The staff and leadership at Allan Waters Family Simulation Centre go out of their way to foster collaborative learning opportunities with other organizations. SIM-one is very proud to have a strong, ongoing relationship with Allan Waters. Congratulations to the whole team!”
St. Michael’s Hospital opened its simulation centre in 1996. Today, with a new location at the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute, the centre provides simulation training for students, researchers and clinicians.
